Mgambo Trail
Length: 3 - 4.5 km (depending on start point)
This trail (yellow colour on the map) can be started either from the Magrotto Estate HQ or from the Mgambo village office (1b) located along the Mwembeni-Muheza road.
From the village office, the trail climbs up the road to Mgambo primary school. On the way to the school there is a stream where women come to wash clothes. At the school, there is a nice view to Muheza town and the surrounding lowlands.
From the school, the trail continues through villagers' home yards where you can meet with people in their daily routines, see gardens with different kinds of tropical crops like jackfruit, mango, banana, okra, cassava and sweet potato, and domestic animals like chicken, goats, pigs and ducks.
On the way to the village viewpoint, there is a site where palm oil is extracted using the traditional method.
1a. Mgambo viewpoint (locals call the place Jitegeni)
This is the highest point in Mgambo with a nice view to the Kitulwe Peak, southern parts of the Amani Nature Reserve, Muheza town, Tongwe Mountain, Tanga city, and the Indian Ocean. Dragonflies and different species of butterflies can be seen flying around the place. There is a small kiosk at the viewpoint. A traditional hut with benches should be built for visitors to rest in.
(This trail description is rudimentary. The trail will be further developed during the ongoing project phase II. It could be a round trip that returns to the main road through Kitulwe forest.)
